How should your skincare routine change for fall?
Same skin, drier air. The routine that felt right in July starts feeling tight in October for a reason.
Short answer: Move to a richer moisturizer, exfoliate less often, and add hydration under it (hyaluronic acid or a hydrating toner on damp skin). Keep sunscreen every morning; UV does not take the season off. If you paused retinol for summer, fall is the classic time to reintroduce it, every other night to start. Watch lips and the corners of the nose, which dry out first when indoor heating comes on.
What actually changes in fall
Outdoor humidity drops, indoor heating pulls more moisture out of the air, and skin loses water faster through its outer layer. Oil production often dips a little too. The net effect is that a routine tuned for summer, light gel moisturizer, frequent exfoliation, mattifying everything, quietly stops matching the skin it is on.
Swap
- Gel moisturizer to cream. Look for ceramides, glycerin, or squalane. If your summer moisturizer still feels fine, keep it and add a facial oil as the last step at night.
- Foaming cleanser to a gentler one if your skin feels tight after washing. Tightness is a sign the cleanser is taking too much.
- Mattifying sunscreen to a hydrating one if you want. Sunscreen itself stays daily, no matter what the sky looks like.
Slow down
- Exfoliating acids. If you were at three nights a week, try two. Dry air plus frequent exfoliation is how fall skin ends up red and flaky.
- Clay masks and scrubs. Less often, or shelve them until spring.
Add
- Hydration under moisturizer. A hyaluronic acid serum or hydrating toner applied to damp skin, sealed with your cream.
- A humidifier by the bed. Not a product, but one of the most effective things on this list.
- Lip balm and a plain ointment for the corners of the nose and mouth.
Reintroduce, if you paused
Many people ease off retinol in summer and bring it back in fall, when there is less sun and more reason to work on texture. Start again at every other night, even if you were nightly before; skin forgets tolerance faster than you would think.
What does not change
Sunscreen every morning. Cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen as the non-negotiable core. And the rule that changes happen one product at a time, a week or two apart, so you can tell what helped.
Common questions
Do I still need sunscreen in fall and winter?
Yes. UV exposure continues year round, and it is the main driver of both aging and dark spots. Cloud cover reduces it but does not remove it.
Why is my skin suddenly flaky in October?
Usually the combination of drier air, indoor heating, and an exfoliation schedule left over from summer. Reduce acids first, add hydration second, and give it two weeks.
Should I switch products every season?
Not everything. Most people only need to adjust moisturizer weight and exfoliation frequency. Treat the rest of the routine as stable and change one thing at a time.
