What order should you apply skincare products?

The rule behind the rule: thinnest to thickest, water before oil, protection last.

Short answer: Cleanser first, sunscreen (AM) or your richest cream (PM) last, and everything else in between goes thinnest to thickest. Morning: cleanser, toner, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, sunscreen. Night: cleanser (double cleanse if you wore makeup or SPF), exfoliant on its nights, toner, serum or treatment, eye cream, moisturizer or night cream, facial oil last.

Why order matters

Skincare products are formulated to sit at different depths. Watery layers cannot pass through rich, occlusive ones, so a serum applied over a heavy cream mostly sits on top and may not deliver what you paid for. Going thinnest to thickest lets each layer reach where it works.

The morning order

  1. Cleanser. A gentle one; mornings rarely need more.
  2. Toner or essence (optional). Prep and light hydration.
  3. Treatment serum. Vitamin C lives here, under sunscreen, where its antioxidant support helps your SPF do its job against UV damage.
  4. Eye cream. Before the heavier layers so it can actually reach the skin.
  5. Moisturizer. Seals the hydration in.
  6. Sunscreen. Always last, always daily. Nothing goes over sunscreen except makeup.

The evening order

  1. Cleanser. If you wore makeup or sunscreen, an oil cleanser first, then your regular one.
  2. Exfoliant, only on its scheduled nights. Most skin does best with two or three nights a week, not daily.
  3. Toner or essence (optional).
  4. Treatment. Retinoids and strong actives go here, on clean, dry skin.
  5. Eye cream.
  6. Moisturizer or night cream.
  7. Facial oil (optional). Oils are occlusive, so they close the routine.

The two most common order mistakes

Sunscreen under moisturizer is the first: SPF forms a protective film that works best as the top layer. The second is layering a treatment serum over a cream because the serum "feels nicer" that way; comfort is real, but the serum may reduce in effectiveness under an occlusive layer.

Common questions

Does the order really change results?

Yes, mostly through delivery. Thin, water-based products struggle to penetrate oil-heavy layers, so the wrong order can quietly waste your most expensive step.

Where does spot treatment go?

On clean skin, before moisturizer, directly on the spot. If you use a strong active the same night, keep them off the same patch of skin.

Do I need every step?

No. Cleanser, moisturizer, and morning sunscreen are the essentials. Everything else is optional and should be added one product at a time.
